Powerblock Dumbbells

Both the Powerblock Dumbbells and Bowflex Dumbbells are quality adjustable dumbbells. The difference lies in scalability.

There are three things to look for in adjustable dumbbells:
  • Quality
  • Functionality
  • Scalability

This is where the Bowflex Dumbbells miss the boat. Powerblock Dumbbells are fully scalable up to 130 pounds. You don’t have to start there though, that’s the great thing about them.

They allow you to start small, and add as you gain strength and ability. This is crucial. Many times, we believe we need more than necessary to get started.

Powerblock Dumbbells enable you to start with a basic set, maybe only up to 45 pounds, and grow later as your needs dictate.

When you’re working out at home, for most of you space is at a premium. Powerblocks only take up about two square feet. So you can have a complete set of dumbbells, from 5-130 pounds, complete right in your bedroom. In a space a little larger than your night stand.

The Bowflex Dumbbells give you this benefit as well, only with less weight.

If you know that you’re never going to need more than 50 pounds per dumbbell, and don’t mind spending a little more, Bowflex Dumbbells are an acceptable choice. Just make sure that you factor in where you might be strength-wise in a year or two.

Powerblock Dumbbells also have a 50-pound set, cheaper than the Bowflex Dumbbells, so the only reason to go with the latter would be because they look so good. And they do look good.

As adjustable dumbbells go, I don’t have any thing bad to say about Powerblock Dumbbells. That doesn’t happen very often, I’m pretty critical when it comes to recommending equipment, especially to clients.
